KW Question - pro analysis needed :)

I have been using Keyword Dominator to find a giant list of keywords to start with. I like this program because it finds a huge list of KWs that I can then upload into Niche Refinery to find which ones to then plug into traffic travis to see the competition. It finds huge lists to look through without having to manually save the Google adwords key tools. It is a good process I have started using, however, when it comes to looking at the competition (PR, BLs) I never know how weak the competition is. Sometimes I will see PR 0's littering the top 10, 2 or so PR3's and thats all, with limited backlinks ranging from 10-200. Most of the competition (2-3) websites are youtube, or amazon.

Travis will say its a star 2, difficult difficulty for competition? Should I back off because of this statistic even if the tops seem to be low competiton in my gut? Any advice? None of the pages rank higher than PR3. Top 10, there is one website with 800 BLs but the rest are hovering around zeroish. 5 PR 3's, 1 youtube, 1 amazon, 1 walmart (the top #1). It looks like the #2 and #3 spots are a fellow IM. I am new to IM been on the forums for a few months and could use the advice. I am looking to target a KW that is 40,000 global monthly searches, 2 star traffic travis rating, but it looks pretty good to me...?

PROs I need your help! Thanks
Will give more info as needed in helping me make this decision! Will not give the keyword out though, for all you skeptics .

    PS: it is long tailed

Are you using the SEO feature in Traffic Travis? I find it is fairly accurate. If it tells me it is going to be difficult to rank, then I tend to stay away from it. If it's easy to rank for I use some judgement as to what type of niche I am in. It's better to stay in the little fish tank than to try to swim at sea.

Additionally, it depends on what you are trying to do with the keywords. Write articles, build sites or what?

I will be trying to optimize the website through ad sense or amazon products. But WP based blog, article content. I seem to never know what I could beat for the top guys. Certain keywords I look at on TT says 4 stars/5, is searched exact 2000 or so per month, (I am starting small) but then the keyword seems targeted for some reason? The #1 or spots even lower like 5, 11 etc. I will see like 2000 backlinks for that keyword on TT and the website will rank 5th or so. I am extremely unclear what makes a keyword able to be rankable. Been trying to clarify myself for weeks now but the more information I get the more confusing the choice seems to be.

How do you know if you can beat these guys in trafic travis if it does indeed say it should be easy?

When I search for keywords of course, I look at how easy something is to rank. I also look at the domain names. If I can get an exact match domain name, then I go with it, because they are naturally easier to rank.
