Kobe goes home with the silver -- 81 points

Over at SI.com, Kobe took over 81 points against the Raptors which leaves him with the second highest record of scoring -- with Chamberlain at 100 points back in 1962. Kobe has accomplished quite a bit and he continues to do so. It seems he's the only thing keeping the Lakers alive right now.

I was just about to post about this one.

81! Second only to Wilt the Stilt's 100 in the sixties - when Wilt was a 7 foot center playing against a bunch of 6'4" white guys.

And he put up 62 not too long ago against Dallas in three quarters at which point Phil Jackson sat him down because the game was locked up.

Crazy - he only had 27 points in the first half. This year Kobe is giving MJ a run for his money. Looks like the Lakers might make some noise next year - or even this year if they could work a magical trade somehow and get him at least one other playoff caliber player on the team.

Wow - and another big one tonight - Sonics beat the Suns 152-149.

Is it a full moon tonight?

I'm not much of a Kobe fan, but that is quite a great accomplishment.

Yea, he has really destroyed his public image with the rape charge and bad-mouthing of Shaq. But he is a helluva basketball player.

I could really care less about his personal life - what makes me not like him:
    a) he's way too full of himself
    b) he can't win without shaq

Everyone tries to compare him to Jordan - but there's no comparison, Kobe hasn't touched the same level ...

So when the lakers won 122-104 last night, that wasn't considered a win?

Correct on there being no three back in Wilt's day -- which, by the way, makes Oscar Robertson's incredible numbers back then even more incredible.

However, on the day he scored 100, Wilt actually made 28 free throws (out of 32 attempts).

Lest Wilt's accomplishments be tainted, Wilt's opposing centers in the NBA (not the 100-point game, though) included men like the Celtics' legendary Bill Russell, widely considered the NBA's all-time best defensive center. Wilt himself said that among his greatest achievements was hauling down 53(!) rebounds in a game against Bill Russell.

I had the privilege of watching Wilt play many times, including once seeing him with the Harlem Globetrotters (before you could go "early" to the NBA). The year he averaged 50 points a game, he also averaged 25 rebounds! I agree with Charles Barkley who, when asked who was the all-time great NBA player, said Wilt Chamberlayne, no question.

Kobe's great. But I'll let him do it for a whole career, as Michael and Magic and Larry Bird and Oscar Robertson did, before I mention him in the company of Wilt.

Any team can win a game, I meant win a Championship. He would have never won without Shaq standing under the hoop for him.

I agree that Kobe is the only thing keeping the Lakers alive -- but Kobe still knows his game.

Jordan could have scored 80 every game if he wanted to.

Yes, but Jordan didn't have to prove he can win without Shaq.

I think last year made it quite clear how many games Shaq wins. That number was 17, if I remember right. Lakers (without Shaq) -17 games. Heat with Shaq +17 games. :)

Yep, not not only that- he also knew there was more to the game than scoring.

He and Kobe are pretty close offensively but Jordan's defensive play was much better.

And Jordan definitely made the guys on his team better players than they would have been without him. I don't know if Kobe does that or not (I haven't really followed the NBA closely since Jordan left...the Bulls :p ).

yes - and it was before the 3 point line as well.

In Kobe's defense, none of Jordan's teams could have compared to this years lakers. I'm a huge lakers fan and these guys are as bad a team as the Lakers have put forward in the last 15 years. Take away PJ and Kobe and you have the Clippers of the '90s.
