    Sorry Janie, but it's not always true, infact it is false most of the time..

    As we know when you heat up anything, it expands losing the density in process. Water is no exception. So since Hot water is less dense than cold water, Cold water is heavier.

    However, water is an interesting chemical. Water achieves highest density at 4 degree C. When you cool it down below 4 degree, the density starts to decrease and that is why ice floats on water.
    water at 4 degree (hot) is heavier than water at 3 degree (Cold).

    Science is interesting, isn't it? :D
