Knights of the Old Republic not working with Vista 32 bit

Hi, I am trying to play KotOR one again on my new Vista, 32 bit, home premium system. It installed, and starts up fine. However, when i try and run the game, sometimes, while I'm playing, it will just shut down and i get a message box saying vista had to shut it down. I don't know what the problem is.
Ive tried searching forums but so far they've all been about 64 bit and not starting up. Ive tried checking the box in the advanced sound settings to help with compatibility and also going into the games compatibility options and checking Run Compatible with Windows XP service pack 2. neither helped.
I don't know whats wrong with it, and any help would be nice. i would prefer if i didn't have to reinstall as i am farther through the game than I've ever been and i don't feel like losing the file.

    Thanks
P.S. Sorry for any random Spelling/grammar mistakes, this is the second time through i've typed this (due to an accidental back button press) and I'm annoyed. Plus my KotOR just shut down on me and i hadn't saved for a while.

For example, in the caves place on the planet with the Sith Academy. Its called like Shyrak caves or something like that. It's right before you get to the tombs. I kill the Tarentyrak thing and everytime, the game freezes up and stops

Have you tried updating the game? It is quite a buggy game..Lower the graphic settings when playing and run in XP compat mode. If you do end up reinstalling you should be able to locate your save file somewhere and just recopy it back into the same place.
