So a little Jealous am I after reading this article. In fact after this article came out in the past2 days his website made 40k. What do you think Fake site that was generated in hopes the PR would make him money, or real? http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20051229/ts_nm/homepage_dc;_ylt=AuCwPaufPWTTbfSesTA4TiCs0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTA3ODdxdHBhBHNlYwM5NjQ-
If that's the case, then why does his website list this? Sold: 936,700 Available: 63,300 Looks like he still has $63.3k to go before hitting $1M. That's 6.33% short of his goal. I dunno about you, but I don't consider something 'done' when I'm almost there-- only when I've actually achieved it. I still don't see the 'news' in this article-- it's all old info, aside from maybe an update on how many pixels he's sold... -- Derek
From what I heard Alex is a front, and a lady by the name of Imal Wagner is doing all of the work. She is a professional marketer, and that is why his or maybe Imal idea is so popular.
I still dont see how these became so popular, guess it was just a fad. I have also heard that they spent thousands a month on marketing of the idea.
It certainly didn't just 'happen'. Even if you read his supposed blog, he talks about how he had to talk the UK media into interviewing him, yada yada. It really is a gaudy thing, and traffic is just a spike that will die to nothing soon enough. I wonder if all those people who spent thousands of dollars on pixels of advertising realize that it's likely short term... -- Derek
Have you ever tried the search option?? http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=28853 Duh!!! Try it some time!!!
Well, short lived fad or not, hes made his money and his mark. And for the advertisers, I think they've already got their investments worth, atleast those who got in on it early enough. If you look at this as inspirational, maybe you could get something out of it. But if you're just going to be jealous and grumble about "his luck" in every thread in every forum, you're just wasting your time really, while you could be making money!
As I just bought a domain that had one of those scripts on it (thinking of running the script as a subpage just for fun) and a friend of mine said "well it feels like I just saw a site like that less than a week ago". I did a G-search for million pixels and sent my friend the link to that search. Guess what, the million dollar guys page is first of 3.5 million (no pun intended) for that, I guess hes on top of a lot of other searches as well. Considering the amount of authority sites that has linked to him in news articles that's no surprise, so I doubt he's had problem selling most of his pixels.
People didn't search for "million pixels" before this site came to be. I would say that most of the traffic is being typed in the address bar, through bookmark, or through a search of google (someone specifically looking for his site). He found a way to attract advertisers, and possible customers to the same place, which is the goal of anybody in marketing. While it may be a fad, I would say that most anybody who spent a lot of money (say >$1000) has made their money back if they had anything that resembled a decent site. Those spending a $100 probably didn't expect any returns, but may have gotten them anyway. Check out Shoemoney's blog and read his post about traffic he is recieving from his 100 pixel square. It wont continue to get 40 or 50 thousand uniques a day forever, but I think it will continue to be a good choice for any advertiser who participated. While short term, returns are returns, and that is what is being produced. If no one was making any money, people wouldn't have spent almost 1m dollars already.
