As far as keywords and SEO, if the relavant keywords are contained in the content of a document, is it neccessary to put them in the keyword meta tag?

That tag has next to no value. I use it because MSN may still give some value to the first few keywords in it.

some SEs to give importance to Meta Tags, so there is no harm if you have them for your website.

But concentrate more on the visible content of your website for keywords targetin'

It is still necessary to put keyword meta tag even though google didn’t that much importance to meta tags, Other or lots of search engines still do. You will lose none if you include your keyword to meta tags so you better do.

You still want to include your main keywords in the "description" meta tag, even if the "keyword" meta tags is seldom used. Also include main keywords in the Title of the webpage.

Some of the small search engines still use the "keyword" meta tag so it doesn't hurt to include your words there, but don't expect it to gain a lot for your site.
