    1. Target your Message
Central to the keyword process is to define the message you want visitors to have and to understand the message that has created customers for you in the past.

Use Wordtracker at http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/ to generate a list of targeted keywords that people type into search engines when seeking products and services like yours. Watch the contextual quality of the words (the relevance of the text to the subject matter); you are not trying to key stuff your content. You are optimizing your content for search engines so that your target audience finds your site.

    2. Long Word Phrases
Long word phrases (long tail) provide more descriptors and filter visitors from potential customers. This is an important stage as you are defining the phrases that are typed into search engines. If you are using the phrases typed by your target audience, chances are that you will rank well on Google and Yahoo and be found.

    3. Know your Competition
An easy strategy for determining your key phrases is to look at what works, do a search for the top sites in your industry or sector. If you know the top competitors in the field look for keywords in the source page of their sites.

Use tools like Web CEO at http://www.webceo.com to analyze the competition. This tool will display competitor sites and the keywords that they are using. This way you can compare to top ranking competitors and improve your chances of finding the best keywords aimed at your market.

You want prospects, and not just traffic.

    4. Indexing and Analysis
There are a variety of tools for key phrase analysis including Google’s keyword tool at https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal which will analyze either concepts or existing web content. Included in many of the tools is an indexing or ranking tool to list the effectiveness of the key phrase or words.

Ensure your designer is using these keywords in the Title tags and repeated in the content 3 to 7 times for every 500 words. Any more words and Google will penalize you. Forget Meta tags – Google no longer considers them relevant in SEO ranking.

    5. Keyword Family
The concept of keyword families is to create a web of words and phrases that will capture the searching trends of more potential clients. Start with one key concept and spread out to related terms. Remember, you want to attract buying humans and not just search engine bots. Lots of traffic does not mean lots of sales, just that – lots of visitors who will buy if demographics around their interests match your product benefits.

    6. Keyword Mapping
Track key phrase effectiveness over time on a spreadsheet for competitiveness and conversion. Patterns and success factors will emerge. The world of business is ever changing and you must know the changes. Again Google Webmaster tools and Web CEO can help here. Grow and prosper by knowing the supply and demand, and competitors’ strategies through relevant keywords in your content.

    7. Evaluate and Test
Regardless of the method chosen, track the result, test the modifications and evaluate the results. For example, are your pages appearing in the top 20 for the most popular keywords and least competitive keywords after 1 to 3 months?

    8. Review the Industry Periodicals
Study the industry/sector for trends, key topics and buying triggers to determine the best key phrases.

    9. Survey your Customers
List questions about how they found you as part of your customer relationship process. Run a newsletter to collect information on their search engine uses.

    10. Include Content to Support the Keyword
If the visitor stays and/or returns to your site, it is much easier to convert them. Give the visitor content that will keep them at the site.

however, adsense does not necessarily post ads that are related to your contents.
Since google is always gathering users' personal interests. they post ads that are geared toward visitors' personal interested.
In that case, it does not really matter what contents you have or what keywords you choose anymore, does it?

Using a good keyword tool is also equally important. You can go for free ones like Google keyword tool or paid ones like the SERPAnalytics tool. A keyword is indeed the key to a successful online strategy.
