Keywords question

I wanted to propose a question regarding keyword selection.

Say I am brainstorming my keywords and plan to have a reasonable budget and time to spend on achieving results.

Would it be good to spend the majority of the budget on single word keyword which may be highly competitive in the hope that it will help my 2word or 3 word phrases.

Or would be it more advisable to go for each phrase only and leave the single keyword.

The question is for one of my sites which I am considering to purchase a PR9 link, previously I have been targetting phrases and was wondering if I should start concentrating on a more broad single word and hope it helps with my phrases and long tail.

    Hmm, hope that makes sense.

As a general rule, go for multiple word phrases. As they are more specific, the likelihood is greater that the seacher is interested in your site. Also one keyword phrases are usually more competitive.

A link from a PR9 page with possibly a zillion other links on it and possibly about a subject completely unrelated to your niche. Hmmm, useful :)

Just because the link is on a PR9 page, it doesn't mean you will get much value from it.

Don't concentrate in one keyword. Target different combination of your targeted keyword.
