when i was building my site, i didn't know the first thing about html or anything about making a website. I think my site is pretty decent now, but the hardest thing is getting traffic to it. here's the html code of my meta keywords, for all i know...im doing it completely wrong. my target is fitness, bodybuilding, people looking for information and exercises, recipes, stuff like that.

<meta name="keywords" content="Fitness, bodybuilding, learn exercises, bodybuilding supplements, fat loss articles, supplement articles, healthy food, recipes, gym routines, workouts, biceps, triceps, quads, legs, abs, chest, pecs, lats, back, traps, calves, training" />

there are a whole bunch of other meta tags that my friend hooked me up with. should i be looking for just keywords? or do you think i should be putting in phrases that people would be typing in at google?

The keywords meta tag is vertually ignored by search engines. You need keywords and keyword phrases in your TITLE tags and DESCRIPTION meta tags as well as inbound links, your page text, and image ALT tags. But DON'T over do it...less is more and make it readable, because your users come first, otherwise it can't be viewed as "keyword spamming" and get you penalized by search engines.

That's too many, focus on 5 or 6 or maybe a few more.

    Dear jmmealer22

Changing metatags or adding them is not necessarily a rock solid SEO solution for increasing your popularity with the search engines and especially the larger ones like Google that may not be interested in metatags at all.

Adding metatatgs will not bring you traffic.

For traffic you have to add good unique content to your site, submit it to search engines, get it indexed, write and article with a link to your site and submit in the article directories to get a back link , the back links , more ranking in the search engines which means more traffic.

    Stumpleupon and digg your site.

Answer question in http://answers.yahoo.com in our niche , traffic will also come from there.

Make a blogger blog and a link to your website. Post 2~3 posts in the blog each day and after each post ping the servers , this will also help you.

It will not happen in a night , It will take time.

    Regards

    Tehmina

I would use them,as it is not the sole fix that will put you in the top ten ,but it combined with other things helps to get you there. As stated above dont over do it with 25 keywords...

    Other things ?
    1.backlinks,
    2.then some backlinks
    3.then add some more backlinks.

Backlinks are king, but you must also have content and SEO'ed pages.

You're wasting your time with the meta tags, as everyone's said above most SE's ignore them. You need to do some keyword research as I doubt you'll be ranking for fitness or bodybuilding. Here's some KW's that would be worth targeting from your Homepage or from a post.

    - 5 components of physical fitness
    - free bodybuilding routines
    - printable complete bodybuilding routine
    - components of physical fitness
    - importance of physical fitness

    etc. etc.

Stick with long-tail terms as these will be the quickest to bring you traffic. Keep in mind that as you build links for long-tails, you will also be improving your chances at ranking for top-level KW's, such as fitness. Good Luck!

Yes, don't put too much emphasis on your meta tag keywords because they aren't as significant as before. Focus on your link-building efforts, onpage seo and article marketing to get ranked well in the SERPs. The more competition you have for a particular KW, the more work you'll need to do. Good luck.

But meta tags are an important part of on page SEO and site representation considering portions of the description meta tag are used in the search results...not the keywords tag though...it's useless. But as said above, there is more than just on page SEO needed to achieve high positions in the SERP's.

Choosing proper KW is the basic then comes link building. If you have chosen the proper keyword and you later concentrate on link building You will have far better results in much less time.

Google and other search engines no longer care about the keywords meta tag any more. So I suggest you do not put a meta tag in your site.

Only title tag and description meta tag are important.
