As I said in other post, before doing any task, before even writing the keyword on your website, you should look for the competitiveness of the keyword you're aiming for. If it is a high competition keyword, forget it, unless you're willing to pay a fortune in advertisement and heavy SEO. Use Google adwords keywords tool. Then, after you find a potential keyword with a reasonable amount of competition, you can start doing the recommendations from the other users. If you're new at SEO, or don't know much about it, I'll recommend to read a book to cover some essential background and basic terminology.
After doing on-page optimization you should start off-page optimization for your keyword. If your keyword is low competitors then it optimized instantly but it have high competitors like promotional calendars then it will take time to optimized. You should do high PR social bookmarking and forums posting for your keyword.
