Keywords in title tag

Does it matter where your keywords are in your title tag? For example I have my main keyword first then others after that! But if i moved my main keyword a few words along my title tag, will this affect my rankings?

I rank 4th for a keyword and dont want to drop any places! If it does hurt my rankings i wont change my title tag!

Yes, you maybe dropped on SERP. You shouldn't do that

The closer to the beginning of the title the keyword is, the more weight search engines give to it. Title keyword position and title keyword density are quite important. It is not worth pushing your main keyword a few words back.

Keep the most important phrases near the start for sure

well, it's the most important part of your optimization. also the position and occurrence matters as it shows the importance.

And also, does less words after my main keyword mean more power to my main keyword or not?

Yes you are correct. Extra words just dilute the strength of your keywords. So avoid unnecessary fluff words in your titles.

I'm not sure about diluting it personally, I'd just get the main keyword(s) near the start no matter what you have after them

Yes the closer the keyword is to the top the better. This is often referred to as keyword proximity. However I can tell when an article was written for the search engines, and from what i see analytically: not as many people link to these articles. I would focus on content!

Not just for keyword potency, but also technically speaking (in regards to adding it at the start). In some cases where your site is referenced or listed on another site, the other site may pull the first couple words from your metas automatically and that's what you're stuck with as anchor text or as a description. I've seen some major directories and article sites do this.
