Do search engines see keywords that are enclosed in single quotation marks on the page as different keywords? For example: a) 'furniture' b) furniture Are these both the same or different? I ran a keyword density tool on my site and they both came up as seperate keywords...
I never considered using quotation marks around a single keyword. I use them for two-word (or more) phrases. It would appear that Google sees the two versions of furniture differently; in that Overstock.com has #1 for the word using quotation marks, and Ikea.com has the top spot without quotation marks. However, both searches reared the exact number of returned results.
I guess what I want to know, is that will my sites' keywords get picked up by search engines if I have quotation marks around them on my site?
I think google gives importance to the <quote> and bolded keywords. Well, those are just two (2) of the 200+ factors for Google Search Results Ranking (GSRR)
I doubt VERY seriously if they see them as different when they are indexing your page. Google like most engines will normalize the text before indexing it. By this I mean they will replace all punctuation, special characters, etc. with spaces... then reduce repeating spaces to a single space. Have you paid attention to Google's WMT? There are pages there where they will show you what link text they are seeing on inbound links to your site... Have you every paid attention to it? If one site links to me with "http://www.example.com/pagename.html" they will display that the link text appears as "http www example com pagename html". They will likely see them as the same... I have never heard of Google considering <quote> the same way they do <b> or <strong>... as emphasizing the text. It would actually be kind of dumb if they did... What if they indexed a long page that had on it a sentence that was actually quoting someone: Do you really think Google would be dumb enough to think that that is the most important thing on the page because it's quoted? What if the entire page was a script for a play or a book or something? Almost every line on the page could contain quotes... Do you really think Google would penalize them for overoptimizing it because they saw quotes on every line like they would if you bolded keywords on every line and they caught you? NO. Don't worry about using single or double quotes inside the content of your page... I am 99.9999999% sure they are a non-issue.
First of all users dont search within the quotation marks for keywords. So dont worry for considering these factors.
Canonical - you haven't read my post properly. I'm not putting anything in <quote> tags, nor am I trying to make anything look more important, all I've done is enclosed certain keywords in SINGLE QUOTE MARKS, like this: Search for 'Furniture' in 'North West' I've done this for the benefit of the end user. Anyway I used the keyword density tool at http://www.webconfs.com/keyword-density-checker.php and it treats the quoted keywords as separate keywords to their non-quoted versions.
hmm, yes it helps but it depends on the website. WE"VE run a test for it within two week and got good results which means it is effective... But then again, it depends on the site...
Eh? What do you mean "yes it helps"? Does nobody here READ before they reply!? I'm not trying to make it improve rankings, I just want to know if putting quote marks around keywords will have any detrimental affect for the keywords I am trying to rank for. Surely someone must have an idea.
