    Thank you!

You'll understand how many times a keyword phrase, such as america car makers is actually used as a phrase people search for on the search engines.

I just tried the keyword suggestion tool at http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/suggestion/
for the term, america car makers , but no data was available, because it is not a commone search phrase people search for.

What other keywords do you think people would use to find your site?

    cheers

I've seen many search results from high ranking sites where it will pull the string from the sites names.

For example, searching for "cool site" you may find results for a site called "thisisareallycoolsite.com". At least google is this way I know.

americarmakers.com was just an example, I don't have a site for that, I am just wondering about registering domains with keywords in them and then building a site.

Another one can be: softwarehouse.xxx, what would Google or the others pick up as keywords
    soft+warehouse,
software+house or both at the same time like
    software+warehouse?

Do you know or can you find out?

I don't understand how that tool can help me understand how a SE picks up keywords in domains, sorry.

    Thank you.:)

I know for a fact that G will pickup keywords out of a url like "softwarehouse.com" for the search "soft warehouse", but rumor is that "soft-warehouse.com" would be better for search results for that keyword.

and no, the keyword suggestion tool would not help you find your answer, that must have been a misunderstanding. it will help you choose a domain if your wanting keywords in your domain.

I believe it will get picked up for each of those words. Having keywords in your URL like that seems to help quite a bit with both Yahoo and MSN.:)

OK, so you have the impression that overlapping keywords in domain names are picked up individually...

It may also be worth trying to work the various keywords into your page through headings and text - you may pick up unexpected traffic as a result - Your less likely to if you hypenate so there's no likely confusion IMO.

Google does recognize the individual words. You can see this when doing a search and they bold the words. A search for "Widgets" for example may have a Serp that has this

we have BlueWidgets in our store

They don't always bold however so how they are choosing to split words is still a bit of a mystery.

The url plays a small part in the ranking itself so I wouldn't worry too much. The real power is how many people will link to you using your keywords as anchor. They tend to do this whether you have a dash or don't have a dash.

If you decide to go down the dash route, keep it to a single one (2 if you really have to) as too many dashes can make your url look spammy in the SERPs.

    Thank you yfs1!

Only, my question, which obviously was not very clear, is about overlapping keywords in domain names.

    As for: digitaliban.xxx

Would both digital and taliban be picked up or just digital and ban or just dig and taliban or what?

And yes, they don't count that much once you consider all the factors involved, but I have this itch, and need to know if possible, or find out if anybody knows.

    Thanks!:)

That was the "unknown" part of my answer. How they divide them is still a matter of theory

If you were to register a domain name Blue-Widgets and the .com or .co.uk domains were not available, would the search engines punish you for using a .tv, or .cc domain name? Or are these domain names treated the same as .com and .co.uk?

    Thanks,

    Mike

    Hi MikeW

Thats a really good question you asked "would the search engines punish you for using a .tv, or .cc domain name" and I hope you get your answer. Whenever I check websites that I compete with, I rarely ever see top ranking sites with the .tv or .cc extensions. But this might be because these file extesions simply are not registered nearly as many times as the .com
My opinion is it should not make much of a difference what extension you use, because search engines are more concerned with the sites content, and the keywords in a URL are as important when ranking sites.

Unique and rich content within a website is what I have read in so many place is the thing to do to get high rankings. It makes sense, but I find it is easier said than done.

    cheers
