Is there any point using keywords and descriptions anymore when google freely states it will use the page content and pretty much ignore keywords and description?

Keyword is an important thing, though, to Google; but I recommend to get the G+ to make the boost up ranking if ur keyword is very competitive.

Well said by Yasir. When somebody searches for a particular keyword. If you have relevant keywords in your web page tags then crawlers will definitely pick your website in search results.

From my experience, today's Google does not add any value to the meta elements (meta keywords). However, page title is still important, both from Google's point and from a searchers perspective. An optimized page title can do great things. Also, consider the meta description to be important. Not from an SEO perspective, but from a search perspective. A good, catchy meta description can entice a searcher to click into your site.
