Keyword with no adwords bid on them - worth pursuing?

Well, not exactly adword bids, as i'm using overture to check, but you get the picture.

One of my projects is on a topic that is not very popular (few thousand searches/month) and even more, it's popular for romanians more then anyone else. So I'm not trying to get rich with this one, it's just something i want to do for myself mostly.

I've been looking for keywords to target, and there are no bids on them on overture.

My question, Is it worth going after a niche that has no bids on those keywords? Generally speaking, not just for this project. I keep hearing "find a niche" and "do something you like", and I agree, but is it worth doing just because you would rank easier in Google? (couple thousand searches/month for that keyword and only couple of websites on that topic).

Do a search for the keyword on google and see how many ads show up. If no ads, or very few, the keyword isn't likely to pay very much. If it is a niche you enjoy, you still might want to do it. Foreign keywords, as a general rule, pay less than US traffic, but there might be related keywords that you could also target. Going after major keywords that are high paying can be a big mistake. Some of these companies have in-house SEO and spend six-figures marketing their site and it might be virtually impossible to rank for. Some credit card offers pay $60 and more per conversion, but the competition for this traffic if fierce. I don't know about your particular keyword, but niche is the way to go - and the number of searches is obviously also important.

This isn't my only project, it's just the only one that it's in a niche with no ads for those keywords (ok...one ad from Ebay unrelated to my niche). Obviously i'm interested in making money with adsense, but I'm curious if it's worth going after niches with little competition but at the same time no payed keywords for them.

Just curious if I should stick to niches that i both like and have reasonable pay/keyword or maybe there are also money to be made from niches with some searches but no expensive keywords atached.

I got a feeling that I'm not making myself understood here :p
