I wish there was a FAQ section on this sub-forum which would help a lot of folks. Tried searching the forum, but couldn't get concrete answers. I am new to keyword tracker and have loads of questions around it. Would be great, if someone could answer all of these. 1) While registering for keyword tracker there was a field called as Google API. I went through the link given in the settings page (code.google.com/apis/console/), but couldn't get one. Some one in the forum stated that Google discontinued their API. Will this tool work if we leave this field empty? 2) I added my keywords now. How long will it take for the tool to generate report? I added, few keywords an found all positions to be zero under Day, Week and Month. 3) In the settings page, we were asked to visit code.google.com/apis/console/ to enable 'Custom Search API'. Should we login to the gmail that is associated to DP? If yes, how about users who have Yahoo on DP? If not, should we create project or something on the API page? When I create create project, it gives me quite a lot of options. I am no developer, so these are greeks and arabic. Can someone illustrate what it is? P.S.: My rankings still show as ZERO even though I rank for few keywords. If a moderator could checkout what's the problem, that would be great.
1. It's not discontinued. Did you follow the instructions next to the screenshot that shows what you are looking for? For example fif you enable "Custom Search API" as it says? 2. Without an API key, it will never work (see #1). 3. It has nothing to do with your Digital Point email, you should log in to the API console with your normal Google Account. When you create a project, I believe the only option it asks for is for you to name it (and it can be anything you want). What else are you seeing?
Thanks, for your reply, Shawn. I figured that I went into Create OAuth link and it asked me hell a lot of questions which was so confusing.
For some reason it is asking to check 'Custom Search API' twice. Firs time when I did, it shows nothing but OAuth on the API Access page. I had to change the OFF to ON on custom search API again, to get the API key. I cross checked with another Google account and it's the same. Weird, isn't it? On a side note, how accurate is the localized search on keyword tracker. I used Google US on the tool and find the result biased when I do an actual search on Google.com from a US IP (manipulated my UK IP to check US ranks on Google.com through HMA). Any advice?
It should be accurate... but Google results are going to be different even in different parts of the US since they personalize results more or less for everyone... so it's not really as simple as having a US IP.
Thanks. The tool is great. I am wondering how in the world I missed this all these days One quick suggestion though - While the data and the functionality is great, the charts are not that great when it comes to UX. If this is something that you want to improve, you may try advanced graphics solutions like fusioncharts to add appealing graphics to the charts. Just my suggestion.
Don't really need anything fancy or 3D... people are there really to see the data, not the chart. Do you have an example of what you would want to see?
I understand. People are really there for data and fancy charts or 3D are more of a "Nice to Have" feature set. I have previously worked with Fusion charts for one of my clients and they are really good. See sales comparison chart on http://www.fusioncharts.com/demos/business/sales-dashboard/view/index.html These charts are good from a User Experience standpoint. Of course, Fusion Chart would cost you a bit, but definitely if you are on a hunt for 3D flashy / JS charts, you would have quite a lot of options in the market. If this is something that interest you, let me know and I can help you figure out a good low cost / quick win solution. Cheers.
Not even sure it's a "nice to have" thing in this case... I'm sure some people would like them, but I know there's other's that would prefer not to (myself included). As far as UI/UX stuff goes, things have been moving *away* from high gloss/3D, etc. for most everything... Most notably, check out iOS7... http://www.apple.com/ios/ios7/ Obviously not everyone likes the super glossy/3D stuff... they are doing away with it there too. In fact, the Keyword Tracker *had* 3D charts many years ago, but we did away with them a couple years ago. Just was pointless and was distracting from what people were there for (looking at the data, not the "beauty" of the chart itself).
Hmmm... You might be correct. Especially after you said that the keyword tracker had 3d charts years ago.... Good luck.
