Keyword Tracker ISn't Working Properly (to my advantage)

Discussion in 'Keyword Tracker' started by Lars518, May 17, 2006.

There are at least 8 keywords that Tracker ranks at numbers much higher than actual. i.e. one rank shows 66 and Google itself list it as 2. I have 6 other keywords that Tracker ranks at higher numbers and Google lists at 1.
Obviously I am delighted that it isn't reversed however, can someone tell me why that happens. The same thing happened when I used the tracker on May 5.

The tracker uses your API to find your rankings. Sometime the API data will be different than data from the different google datacenters. There's not much you can do about it. Just take the keyword tracking data with a grain of salt.

What's an example of one of the keyword/URL combos it's happening for (exactly as you entered them)?

    www.clearanswers.co.uk

Compensation Claim = 28 through API - should be 3 (10 results per page)
Compensation Claims = 22 through API - should be 3 (10 results per page)

I have told my CFO that I can provide the links to prove the improvement, but that the API servers are out of date - so both of the automated tools that I use are off kilter.

Actually if I check Google manually, I don't see it in the top 100...

When I check Google manually, I get Aircraft Charter at #62, Airplane Charter at #3, Executive Jet Charters at #66...

I just checked Google manually and Aircraft Charter is # 2 for corporatecharters.ca
Can't understand why you came up with 62.
    Same for other keywords
My clients are coming up with the lower numbers also (fortunately for me)

Most likely it's Google doing country geotargetting. Google will alter results based on the country you are in. So sites it thinks have more to do with Canada (the site does have a .ca extension), will rank higher for people in Canada.

Yeah - I am in the uk, and I get results from the uk. I think it might have something to do with the API?? The results for my other sites are correct, it is just this site has been performing badly and is now performing well... The API results are not showing the same as google.co.uk..

Google results vary for everyone based on their location. Doesn't really have anything to do with the API. Are you using the advanced usage script? And if so, what country is the server in that you are hosting it on?

No - I'm not using the advanced script. I have not needed to for the other sites I track. Which is strange, I know.

The keyword tracker shows me g.co.uk serps for my other two sites. I know this as I have locked google to a .com site and never seen any of my sites for the keyword searches.

The only problem is that clearanswers is just not showing as high through the API as it is through the UI.

I'm guessing the problem is that you *aren't* using the advanced usage script. Because of that you are seeing results geotargetted by Google for an end-user in the United States. If you run the advanced usage script, and put it on a server physically close to you, you should start to see Google results closer to what you (personally) see at Google's site.

Google is tricky in that search results will look different based solely on the end user's physical location.

Shawn - after two days of using the script - I am seeing no difference in the ratings.

What's the IP address of the server the script resides on?
