Keyword Tool vs. Traffic Estimator

Ok I have a question about finding keywords using Google's Keyword Tool and Traffic Estimator.

I use the KT to search for and narrow my keywords down to my niche. During this process the keywords I pick show "Avg Search Volume" with at least some green in the status bar. I then take those same keywords and run them through the Traffic Estimator and it shows no "Search Volume" at all, what gives?

What is the deal with this? Which tool should I be using to determine if there is any traffic looking at these keywords at all?

    cheers,

Neither of the tools give dependable results. The best option is to throw the keywords up and see what happens.

Doesnt the traffic estimator smell of "you have to bid higher or you'll get no results"?
each time I look at it, I feel the urge to raise my bids on my keywords.
