How and where do you guys find, figure out, and implement your keywords? I'm in over my head here.

If anyone could kindly point me towards a helpful ebook or (free) service for finding keywords and how to use them, I'd appreciate it. I'm afraid I'm a bit of a mess when it comes to the subject and they're so "key" to seo and such, I really need to get a handle on them. Thanks so much.

    Here's A Free Keyword Tool: http://tools.seobook.com/keyword-tools/seobook/

I'll give you an example of how I use it:

I enter a basic term related to something I'm interested in promoting. If I'm promoting my diet program perhaps it'll be "weight loss."

I then find a longer tail keyword phrase like "quick weight loss." This is probably too competitive with 885 searches so I'll click on that to "drill down" farther.

Here I find some interesting possibilities such as

"quick weight loss tips" - 131
"quick weight loss diets" - 43
"quick weight loss diet" - 28
"diets for quick weight loss" - 14

These could be possible titles for an EZineArticles article which then promotes my product.

Hopefully that gives you some idea of how to use keywords... It's more of an art than a science really - I don't have any hard and fast rules... The simple thing is you want to use keywords which have some searches --- but not so many that it's likely to be extremely competitive. If you want to do extra research - search for the term in Google and see what comes up.

For example: I search Google for quick weight loss tips.

Only 1 of the top 10 results even has the whole phrase (in order) in it's title - that could mean it's ripe for targeting. I'd probably go ahead and make an article for this keyword phrase and see what happens. There's never a guarantee that it'll work really - You just try to find phrases that have a better chance of showing up in the search engines.

Of course EZineArticles is just one place you could use your new phrase. You could put up a page at squidoo.com, hubpages.com, blogspot.com, wordpress.com, and/or clearblogs.com that features the phrase as well.

And then you could social bookmark your pages/articles using the phrase too.

    You have Google's Keyword Tool - https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal
There is also WordTracker (excellent) - http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com

Keywords should be used in key places - page name (for example, how-to-lost-weight.html is much better than article2.html on your website), page title, keywords and description meta tags, headline, titles, sub titles, and text. In conclusion - everywhere. Keep in mind that the text should not be stuffed with keywords and should be natural (AKA readable).

Well... you could use this: http://tools.seobook.com/firefox/rank-checker/

But I generally do it the old fashioned way: Just search on Google.com (and sometimes MSN.com & Yahoo.com) and see where my site is.
