Hi Guys, Thanks a lot to everyone here. Ive learnt loads about SEO from everyone. Ive just got to top for my keywords where there wasnt a huge amount of search or competition. Just wanted to get advice: 1. Should I look to consolidate my position so that people cant try and topple my ranking or branch out into more competative keywords that arent as relative to my site? 2. I have a lot of links from a couple of random sites do you know if google penalises your PR if the links arent relevant or is it neutral when calculating? Thanks for any advice!!! Much love
On #1 I'd say do both. Now that you have good rankings for your primary keywords you can spend more focus on ranking for additional terms, but always continue giving a little attention to your primary terms as well just to keep ahead of the competition. On #2 nobody knows for sure with Google, but my experience is that unless you're doing something shady Google isn't going to penalize your site, it may just discount some links coming in, but that's not a penalty to you, it's on the strength of the incoming links. Hope that helps
1) I'd say give minimal attention to top rankings you do have, unless they are not top across google, yahoo & msn. Focus on longer keywords that overlap that keyword and similar keywords. You have gained some strength for each of those individual words. So now put that to use to also rank for more keywords. Depending on what strategies you have used to get that ranking, you may also have more incoming links for that keyword...ie late approved articles, republished articles, republished press releases, late approved directory submissions, newfound links on low quality sites, etc. Don't bother going after irrelevant keywords though. I'm sure there are some other relevant keywords that you do not rank well for. Do some thorough keyword research or pay for some keyword research services. 2) Google PR is not about relevance, it is just about the PR of your Google-approved backlinks. Your PR will not go down because of irrelevance. If most of your link profile is irrelevant it could be a problem in the future. More relevant links do help search engine rankings more, especially if they have your target keywords in the domain, url, title, their own backlinks, etc.
I think it's better to get high ranking for several keywords with small traffic compared to just one keyword with lots of traffic. You won't know if one day Google decide to change their algorithm and take away your top rankings for certain keywords.
