You can use keywords like before.. but if you use long tail keywords then you may have to face less competition.

If you are using high competitive keywords then you have to make effort greatly to rank those keywords.. you should have a good plan for this too.

You need to check all possible keywords and keyword combinations for relevance, popularity, competition and profitability. Since it may take forever to do that manually, you may seek help from some good keyword research tools.

I’ve been using Keyword Country with great success. It not just helps me to research profitable keywords (including misspellings, LSI, synonyms etc) but also lets me spy on my competitors’ SEO and PPC strategy. I am up for it!

I would recommend avoiding keyword domains.

Targeting long tailed keywords is a great strategy as it gets you the most targeted traffic - i.e. the people who will be most interested in your offering.

If considering link building it is important to know that a very small number of high quality editorial votes will be much more effective than a high number of low quality links. Also, you should consider the ratio of anchor text links to unrelated and brand term links very carefully. I do not link build using ANY of our keywords at all - just very long tailed versions, completely unrelated anchor texts or brand terms.

Can't see the connection between keywords and Penguin 2 - There is no magic box for keywords Google decides what they are from relevant quailty page content

After Penguin 1.0 and 2.0, Google usually detects it, when you try too hard to rank for a "fat" keyword.
For example, if you try to rank for something like "bali tours", it will be hard to do, because now after penguin it is dangerous to use the same keyword too many times in the anchor text.

So, some people take a different approach, they look for ways to rank for a bigger number of keywords, but less popular ones. For examples, one could try "plan a trip to bali", "how to get to bali from new york" , "things to see in bali", "tourist attractions in bali", "diving centers in bali", etc.

Chances are there are fewer people looking for these longer keywords (long-tails), but it will be easier for you to rank for them, and it will look less obvious to Google that you're pushing hard for one specific keyword.

Just get a keyword tool that can tell you the number of searches for longer key phrases, pick those that are relatively popular and optimize your site for them.

Work on hierarchy keywords. Take from Kianu42's example, decide on your overall keywords, if "bali tours" is your main keywords, then you can branch out to other long-tail keywords like "planning bali tours" and "cheap bali tours", etc.

Work your website and have sub-pages targeting your long-tail keywords. Rank them in Search engines. When they are ranked, slowly work your way up to your main keywords.

It could take time but it will help you in the long run.

Kianu42 is right on with this, as he has been on several other threads I have read. Decide on your "fat keywords", put them on the back burner and start building related posts/pages and as your site gains authority you can start focusing more on the big keywords you want to rank for.

You can create a page for the big keyword, then build 3 or 4 sub-pages for it. These pages will be relevant to the main page. Build a tier type diagram for your site. Where the first sub-page links to the second, which links to the third, then the third can link back to your main page. Hope this helps and isn't too confusing.
