Hi guys, I am currently researching the meta data for a client of ours who is a carpet retailer in West Sussex (England, United Kingdom) They do not sell online so the purpose of the website is to provide information to perspective/existing customers to drive traffic to their bricks and mortar store. I have been using Google Adwords to try and determine which are the best keywords to try and target, however I haven't had much luck yet. Everyone I search for a Adwords tells me that there is 'Not enough data' for the search. This seems reasonable in some cases, but I am surprised that terms like 'flooring sussex' 'laminates sussex' ' 'carpets sussex' come up with no follows. The only phrase that seemed to bring any useful result was 'carpet sussex' which had 390. Another surprising result was 'carpets East Grinstead' which had 39 global searches but no local ones - I guess there must be another East Grinstead outside of the UK? I guess my question to be taken from all of this is, how do I optimise a website when Google Adwords suggests traffic for general search terms is non-existent? Anthony
You might have to do trial and error. Perhaps you could do an adwords campaign trying every possible flooring term but set to just target your region. Then see what long tail keywords you get over time. You probably won't find a tool with stats that in depth.
Many thanks for the response. Good suggestion re: the adwords - unfortunately the firm I work with doesn't favour using Adwords due to our clients having limited/no resources for paid SEO services. I will use some common sense and trial and error and see how we go for the time being. Anthony
Well if that's the case, try to get them ranked for any flooring keywords that have sussex appended at the end. Along the way analyze if any of those are sending traffic. If they are, then you know it would be worthwhile to concentrate on those phrases more. Ideally you'll be ranked high for phrases like 'flooring' when searching from within Sussex. So it may be more a matter of proving to Google that the site is specific to that region but still very relevant for flooring. Another option is getting the client to find a way to make money from foreign traffic even if it's just through AdSense. They might realize that there is decent profit to be made just from supplying lots of content related to flooring.
bid for keywords that have no traffic data, and then you will know if they real have no traffic. It's a cool way to do keyword research. (Actually, I read somewhere that is the ultimate research tool, bidding at least little money, and know for first hand how much traffic do you get)
