Hi there, I just need an honest and quick "how-to" for researching keywords.

Here is what I do. Check the words in Google keyword tool. Look for words that get many searches. Then I type that into google search and see how many results show up. I want a smaller amount of results so that my site has a better chance of making it to page 1.

    Is this correct so far?

My other question is when I type the words into google search do I use quotes around the words or not? What else should I look for?

And finally, for a "good niche" what is considered a reasonable number of competing sites and whats considered over saturation? 250 million? 500,000? 10,000? With or without quotes.

I have searched this Question up and down and all I find is sites selling keyword tracker software. I dont want to buy that at this point. If you are seeling it please dont tell me.

Just use the keyword within quotes and if the number is less than 500,000 then you have a real chance in getting indexed highly for that particular keyword.

This is true but Google is still hard to figure out sometimes. One of my sites, with 2 mil comp, does not even rank with much work. While another site, with 5 mil comp, and no work at all, ranks well.

I say go for 500k or less searched keywords.
