The external adwords tool is a great tool for performing keyword analysis free. If you have an idea for a topic, search the tool for the broad topic. I usually add several variations (still general though) of the topic - broad phrases I think people might be searching for to find a page on such a topic. The tool will show you the most often search phrases related to that topic. Then switch the match type dropdown to exact. Sort by Local Search Volume or Global Search Volume depending on whether you're focused on getting US or global traffic, respectively. Record the keyword phrases and local and/or global search volumes in a spreadsheet.

Then to find out the competitiveness of the phrases go to Google.com. perform the following searches for each phrase found in the tool and record the number of results in the spreadsheet along with the search volumes:

"my keyword phrase" (exact match somewhere on page)
intitle:"my keyword phrase" (exact match in <title>)
inurl:"my keyword phrase" (exact match in URL)
intitle:"my keyword phrase" inurl:"my keyword phrase"

Sites with your targeted keyword phrase in their <title>, in their URL, and ESPECIALLY in both are the ones really trying to rank for the targeted phrase. So these are good indicators of the competitiveness of the phrase. So look for phrases with as much search volume and lowest # of sites competing for the term.
