Keyword Research?

Hi, I've been searching around and everybody is saying to use Google Adwords Keyword Tool.

    https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

I have it open, but honestly, I don't know what to do to use it to my advantage? What are some rules to go by? Am I looking for 5 keywords with a big search volume but small competition? Am I looking for 100 keywords?

    Thanks.

adwords external tool is good but remember that it returns the results from google AND its search partners, not just google. so depending on your keyword, the result it returns could be way off!

it is unlikely that you will find any keywords with big search volume that have low competition. do a search on the KW tool and see how many search result it returns. then search for the same KW on google and see how many search result it retuns. more search result it returns on google, bigger the competition is usually. based on the both result you get, you will be able to get a picture of your targeted market

    KW = Keyword.

As for you original question, I can tell you what I do.

    1. After you're done creating/publishing an article, think "What would I do a Google search for to find this very article?"

    2. Input this search query into the Google Adwords Keyword Tool, perhaps use a few synonyms, use pluralized forms of the terms, use adjectives, and so on. This helps Google give you more tips on keywords you might like.

    3. After that, open Notepad. Now write down every keyword that is medium competition or higher and save it. Now write down all the rest that are lower, but still relevant.

    4. Decide whether or not you want to go big and compete with large websites, or dominate the smaller terms first. The smaller terms will be less expensive/time consuming of course.

    5. Whatever you do, save the other text file of keywords. You should target those once you get the chance/feel confident in pushing forward after your initial success of your original goal.

    Best of luck!

Wait, I have a question for your information, zac.

I haven't created the article, let alone the web site...I thought you were supposed to find the niche first.

It depends on what you are looking to rank for - a KW with 1000 visits a day may be too hard for you to try to rank for. For a smallish site with low PR, a lower number of visitors would probably be better.

Ok, now I got what is exactly keywords and of course, its research online. I wonder if it is an expensive service, and especially what about the effectiveness of that service. Actually it seems to be a service that I wish now that my business is also on the web. Some tips about it?

    Hello Willi,

you can use first off, Google adwords, you are paying Google to rank higher on SERP on the paid listings, or you can rank free in the non paid listings, to rank free on the non paid listings you will need to "Optimize" your website for that purpose - you can do it yourself or you can outsource some one like me who can do it for you. If you already have a website and a business, you might want to start with generating a keyword related to your business and using the Google keyword tool to generate other related keywords, once you have finlized your keyword list, based on the relevancy to your business and based on the amount of searches this keyword is searched on Google (Aprox), you need to optimize the rank of your website for the selected keywords. From this point on there are many methods to optimize and you'll need to learn search engine optimization to do that properly without harming your website.

if I outsource, I’ll have to pay too much? Because if you guys are saying I can make it myself I can save a lot! But what do you mean with harming my website?
