Keyword Research: What Am I Doing Wrong?

So I am working on keyword research to write articles to promote my clickbank product.

My problem is, no matter what I do, the longtail keywords I come up with still have a minimum of 200,000-500,000 competing results.

I have spent the last hour searching google keyword tool and wordtracker for dozens of variations on the same 5-6 words to come up with at least one longtail keyword that I can rank for.

I don't want to write articles that aren't going to get any search engine traffic.

    Am I missing something?

There is a lot of on page and off page SEO you can do for keyword research with out having to write articles. However perhaps your keyword research is too specific, not every 3-4 word keyword has that many results.

You can read both my All in one keyword research and All in one SEO they are being released as free eBooks tomorrow, would of been today but cut my hand open so have not had the time to finish them off and my typing is slow.
