Keyword research tools showing different stats

Ok, so I'm using two keyword research tools to try and find the right keywords for my niche. The tools I'm using are the Google adwords keyword research tool and a tool called http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/gtrends/ by wordtracker. Both are showing significantly different stats on my selected keyword. Google shows the selected keyword is searched 12,000 times a month and the other shows 97 visits a day which equals out to 2900 searches a month according to them.

Why are these stats different? Which one should I trust?

    Thanks

    Google tool shows results of
    googl search engine...
    Wordtracker combines the
    results of other
search engines too if i am
    not mistaken. But wonder how
can the results is too low compared
    to google tool :)
Whatever it is, I think Google
    tool is more accurate..

    But for better accuracy,
    better to get several keywords
tool to compare and average :)

Set the google tool to show exact matches - I'd trust that result before any other tool

This was the same dilemma I faced a couple of days back. I had just decided on the niche and was in need of some decent keywords to start working.

I started with the free keywords tool from Wordtracker. To my surprise I found that keywords which returned millions of results did not have any searches at all. Then I came back to the good old G. I was finally able to come up with a long list, thanks to G

Here is how I went about. First I compiled a long list of keywords which were related to the niche in any way. Then I ran ALL the keywords (it was a long list) in the Google Adwords tool. The list became longer as the tool searches for some related keywords as well. I then compiled all the data in a Excel file in separate columns (the keywords, Aug Search Volume, Global monthly search volume, general results of keywords, exact results, average advertiser competition). All I had then to set the file on Autofilter and sort on the exact searches col. I had then got a nice list of keywords where the general results were as high as 43,700,000 and the exact results - ONLY 02 !

Its basically a very simple process, all that is required is some thinking out of the box and a some patience !

Wordtracker get their data from dogpile and metacrawler so the results will be different from Google.(wordtracker.com/academy/keyword-quality-and-the-wordtracker-database)

Obviously, the sample data is a lot lower because those sites are far smaller than Google's data. You also need to put the Google Adwords data on "exact" and not "broad" for more accurate results
