    Hi,

We all know that keyword research is the 1st basic step to SEO. Different people follow different approach for this considering different parameter like- search volume, competition, geographical location, nature of business and many more.

So, why not everyone share his best approach to keyword research

Which tool do you use and what is your approach before deciding a keyword/phrase for a website.

I only use the Free Google Keyword Tool.
Search volume must be at least be 800.
    Competition is less than 150,000.
Less than 5 authority sites on the first page when typing keyword in quotes.

    Produce content.
    Then on to on-page optimization.

If you get an exact match domain, you can skip the keyword research. This is because if someone was optimizing for that keyword, they would have bought the exact match domain already. So this is a good indicator that the niche is not competitive.

This is also a god method.
But in Keyword tool, you can search for many keywords and compare the result at once. I think this is the better option to choose your keyword. It also provide many other parameter like average CPC, trending etc.

Like most others, I simply use the google keyword tool. I also use SeoQuake to check for competition. I tried out MarketSamurai for the trial period and it does make some things quite a bit easier, but I have dropped it for now and did not see it worth buying the entire program for the price. That's only because my business model doesn't require doing a ton of research. Otherwise I can totally see MS being very very useful.

I use Google addwords for keyword selection.Competitive analysis is another method for searching relevant keywords for your site.. After short listing the keywords, a few keywords should be finalized.

I also use Google Adwords, but sometimes it seems quite hard to find the best KW, specially if the sphere is pretty competitive. And talking about mentioned search and competition numbers, it really seems that anyone is using different criteria, so it is not so easy to decide to what stick to.

I know that good KW research is almost the most important point in the whole campaign, but I also understand that the best way of doing it I will find just after I will be in this all for a longer time. My experience is just few months, so I still am searching the best method.

I've been using google keyword tool, but also keeping a thesaurus close by. I'll find keywords that are in my general category, seem low competition, and then also look for synonyms that others might search. It's helped to modify the content to feel more natural as well. (I try to be natural anyway, but my brain often gets stuck on a certain word when writing if I don't pay attention)
