There's no definite number of days to get rankings. All you need to do is be patient in building links and get as many quality links.

Like mortgageloan said, you have to be patient. My sites tend to take about 3-8 days to get onto Google. I find Yahoo is somewhat faster (more often than not)

Obviously you're trying to rank #1 on the SERPs. What you want to look at is your competitor's PR, the backlinks they have (I use yahoo site explorer for this) and the PR of the backlinks.

If for instance competitor A had 1 pr5 backlink and 10 pr0 backlinks, you could beat them on the serps with proper SEO on your site, and with 2 pr5 backlinks and 10 pr0 backlinks.

It is also relevant as to the topic of the backlinks are. If you're site is for instance in a "green" or environmental niche, and you have backlinks from sites selling credit cards, you're backlinks, while worth something, are not worth as much as they are not relevant.

    Good Luck!

all depends on competition. The best thing is to see where your competition get their backlinks from and then try and get the same backlinks, but more and of higher quality. Mix your anchor texts a little and keep trading or buying links. Also buy some blog posts and you'll get there eventually for the not so competitive keywords. Always make sure you have good content and try and get some natural links to come in aswell.

Index takes months for fools and newbies, if your smart and willing your site will be indexed quickly. If your lazy and wishful your site will take a while to be indexed.
My sites get indexed in within 6-10 days.

Usually it takes around a weekish unless you submit to digg, then it can be minutes to hours. Just make sure you get some nice links pointing to your site and you should be just fine.

Our articles from http://healthhype.com usually appear around #10 in Google 5-20 minutes after publishing.

If you're asking how much time is needed to rank high...use google.com/sktool to see what people search for a lot, then go in Google and check if that keyword is already covered by several strong sites (that have PR4+). If there is a lot of strong sites on the first Google page, you'll hardly rank there with a weak site, no matter how quality your site/pages are...

I run away from any keyword where any of the first three competitors on a Google search for the keyword (without quotes) are a PR higher than 2. Yes, I am working longtails and going for buying traffic from Google. It seems any wordpress blog that is set to ping just one ping site will get indexed within a week, usually a few days. Google does seem to love wordpress.
