Keyword ranking by getting in through the back door

There are many ways to attempt to rank for certain keywords. If after carefully analyzing our competition we conclude that certain words are a long shot, I was wondering if there is any value in starting locally and expanding outward. This is because of the vertical search engine phenomenon. Any thoughts on this approach?

Long tail keyphrases are the easy way. What do you mean by "starting locally"?

Yes, longtail keywords is a very legitimate and proven approach. Starting locally would involve focusing on getting listed in local sites and directories in addition to using where you are located in the body of your text and in your about page. True enough, that very few people may type in the location for a keyword. However, the vertical engine phenomenon is often overlooked.

I know what you mean. Locally targeted search. This depends on your market/niche. If you are locally based then it would make total sense to target keyworde based on your local area. Either through PPC or SEO.
