Keyword 'net' makes my ads go crazy!

Discussion in 'Google AdWords' started by foreverhired, Jul 8, 2009.

I run an employment search website and just for the fun of it I used the keyword net (and some other unusual keywords) to see what would happen.

My ads went crazy with impressions and clicks from the net keyword.

My question is why? Who is out there googling 'net' all around the world?

    Any insights?

If you're using it as an exact match I would guess it's looked for as that by people interested in Microsoft's NET Framework - which is the first organic result

Makes logical sense, alot of search queries for .NEt Framework as well as other .net related products so it kinda makes a logical factor that you'll get crazy impressions and clicks :p

I am using it as a broad keyword.

I think it is because of .net thing. I am still using it. I mean I have clicks like never before! :) Even the keyword 'job' which is part of my ad, can't compete with it.

Is that keyword relevant to your job search site in anyway, I dont get why you would have used it in the first place :)

But hey thats just me :)

As you are using the broad type, any search with the word net in it will trigger your ad. It could be anything from "ms .net framework" to "fishing net" to "ibm net profit 2008".

I don't ever see any reason to use a one-word keyword. One word doesn't describe a product or service at all. In other words, it's not targeted and specific. Even two-word keywords can mean different things to different people. Also stay away from broad match, especially short tails. Google will expand these and often show your ads on irrelevant searches.

This is true. But what is interesting, when I bring the pointer over the 'net' a pop up comes up saying something like: it's a popular search term. Our system will adjust your ad exposure to a relevant content thus providing quality searches for our users.

Something like that. Which tells me, that Google actually adjusts some of the keywords to the needs of the users.

Thats a huge rarity that you are talking about, though i wish you good luck with it and yes my friend the word "net" will get you enough hits to blow your mind away.

Maybe so. But the system is not perfect. You should force the system to give you quality exposure all the time by using proper keywords and matches. Don't let it decide for you.

I totally agree. Most of the time I do use exact to my ads matches. At the same time, I think that a job search related ad will be fitting in any niche. Maybe not. But, it's worth trying.

Absolutely... anything can trigger that keyword since you are using it in broad search and you will get very untargeted traffic that will just cost you for no reason really unless you do have a good one that you have not let us in on lol.

I don't think there are any difference when it comes to net/com
and generally shouldn't the opposite be true? I mean the com overweigh the net ?
is anything to do with your website --employment? I'm confused too

Well, I tried to use com and org and they didn't produce the same results as net.

By the way I changed the keywords in that ad group and so I am not using the word net anymore. But it was interesting to try.

As far as the efficiency? No, I didn't get many click-throughs... Just clicks.
