I've been reading up on keywords in adwords and got myself confused. Is it better that campaigns have lots of keywords or just a few? I have read conflicting advice that you should have several hundred keywords to only have a few . I know the answer can depened on many factors but as a general guide which is best?

    As ever - somewhere inbetween.
But the main point is that if you have lots of keywords in your campaign, best practice is to divide them up so that you have only a few for each adgroup, so that your ad text and landing page are completely relevant to your keywords.

yes im fast learning that one. On one site I did that and there was a noticable difference , the other site needs tweaking to the same

Yes, I'd focus on 1-3 keywords only IMO. If your site is bluecars.com, I'd mention the word "blue" and "cars" 3-7 times on each page on your site. I'd make one a h1 and also bold them everyonce and awhile. That should help.

I recommend the least amount of keywords per ad campaign. Have each ad in the ad campaign include your keywords in it.

I think smaller keywords list for each adgroup will do better since they're going to be more closely related and more focused which can help you improve your quality score and thus reduce the CPC and improve your ad ranking position.
