According to industry norms, title tag should be around 65 characters and description should be 150 characters, but spammers stuff more keywords and sometimes get good ranking as well.

    Just my 2 cents.

this is true, but adding 10-30 characters for wont hurt you that match. just focus on your targetted keyword :D

Keeping it short is ususally interesting since :the more keyword in your title, the less important each keyword will be.

For the description, it is less important since it is not taken into account for SERP but for Snipets. Don't go over 200 chars, though.

    Anil,

Write your title and meta description so that all the words show up in the Google search result.

There's no point in writing a long meta description that's truncated by "..." in the search results.

And more importantly, write every title and description as a sales pitch. Entice people to click on your link in the results, even if it's not #1.

    Best regards,

    Dewald

A good rule of thumb is to focus on the content of the page and the title. Ignore the meta keywords. SEs tend to gloss over that.

Oh... and focus on long tail!

If you go over about 65 characters in your title, the Google SERPs result will show a truncated link, like this sample title: All the Professional Basketball and Football News That's Fit to Print will be trunctated approximately like this: All the Professional Basketball and Football News That's Fit to P...... That is nonprofessional looking and is probably less likely to get a click than a full, visible title would be.

Personally, when I'm searching, I don't like seeing truncated links in the SERPs. I want to read the whole title.

I use around 60 chars for title, 150 chars for description, and 6 keywords.
Not sure what the norm is but it works ok for me.

Don't worry about the length. Just make a accurate and descriptive title and other tags.
    This site "ezinearticles.com/" is PR6 and have a title = 120 characters.

    For title 65 chars,

and for meta's 200 characters would be the best for google,

but there is no any harm to use more than this limit also.

Very similar to what Jim mention, but you cand find more information about this tags and optimal legth here:

    http://www.seobook.com/video-google-seo-friendly-page-titles

Google shows the first 60 to 70 characters in the search results. Make sure your important keywords occur early in the page title for scan-ability. If your title goes beyond 70 characters Google may cut off the title before 69 characters and display ... at the end of your page title.
