Keywords in Google's case and good keywords should be within the domain, the content, the meta title and description. Google doesn't use the meta keywords or actually give them much weight due to the over-stuffing of keywords by spammers. Meta keywords are not so strong anymore but that doesn't mean keywords are not critical for SEO, they are just used in other locations. I still use them because other search engines give them weight within some of their algorithms but it's not something to sweat about.

When people go to Google or Yahoo, what do you think they search for - thought waves?

    Nope, words.

Calling them 'keywords' is just jargon

If you can match your on page content and keywords with what is most likely in the mind of the person making the search query, you have a winning position in SEO. Search Engines define your niche with the keywords you are ranking for. They try to index these pages in order to return the best results so people keep using their search engine.

I think you are talking about the keyword in "meta keyword". Those keywords are useless in terms of serp ranking. The useful keyword is in the title, description and in body post.

    Agreeing with mlastimoso14.

But I'd like to add that keywords in the description don't affect your ranking- but a well written description will increase the possibility of a searcher in clicking through to your website.

Google gives no credit to a keyword tag. Now, I personally have seen several websites that rank well without the keyword tag, but in all fairness, they were the dot com for their respective keyword. Every site we work on, always contains a keyword tag with the appropriate relevant keywords and all of them rank very well. I have yet to see a site that does NOT have the exact dot com domain name for the respective keyword, rank well for that keyword.
