I stumbled across this tool today. http://www.seochat.com/seo-tools/keyword-difficulty/ It's called the keyword difficulty tracker. It is supposed to be able to tell you how hard it is to rank for a keyword. The closer you get to 100 the harder it is to rank for that term. Here are some terms I checked out(all spammy terms): poker = 77% buy cell phones = 75% online poker = 72% paris hilton = 71% buy ringtones = 61% buy cheap viagra = 52% I think it's pretty cool idea , but I don't understand how it works (is it looking at the number of searches/the number of competing websites, etc).
I think it uses the following attributes to gauge the difficulty: 1) Number of results returned. 2) Inbound links for the No. 1 site.
Yea I just tested a term that people spend 50-100k a year on buying links for and its the same "difficulty" as a term that I just built a site on that is already ranked high on. I would say its a crock of shite, dont get to get too cought up in the accuracy of this tool.
