Yeah thats alot. lol way to many always put your term in with quotations in it so you can see how many pages are optimized for that keyword. Such as "Search engine marketing help" you will get a better understanding of how many people are competing for that term. Email me your web site ill give you some suggestions on what you can shot for that arent to competetive and get traffic. robbyk333 @ myway.com

I would always shot for ones with 4,000 or less. Ive found terms with virtually no competiton I was number 1 in days I was suprised but its attainable.

Number of pages returned is no indication of competiton.

There are several queries you can try, to give you a better idea, including

    intitle:keyword phrase
    inanchor:keyword phrase
    intitle: "keyword phrase"
    inanchor: "keyword phrase"
intitle: keyword phrase inanchor: keyword phrase

but just remember they only tell you how many other site are trying hard to compete for that phrase, not how good they are at it.

Bottom line is, if you want to rank well for that phrase, you are competing with just 10 sites - i.e the top ten in the SERPs. ;)

Look for the first page in search result, if the web site have PR 5 or more it's will be difficult to beat this web site.

You have to check the compitition... Some keywords don't have a lot of competition but the top 20 are well optimized and spend a lot of time and money on their sites :)

Here is a nice tool to check how you compare against the top 10:

And barely any searches for that particluar keyword, right?

I don't think you can make your primary keyword the subject of only afew hundred searches a month.

The page count does not help much to know the competition. You will have to go a little bit deep. Check backlinks of top 10 ranking sites, know their presence in Dmoz / Yahoo, see keyword relevance in domain name and check how may have really targeted the keyword in title, etc. These will give you a fair idea of competition of the keyword.
