DP already has you covered: http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/suggestion/

Use that tool to see if your keyword is worth your time. Then google your keyword and look at the first few sites. Evaluate them and decide if you can beat them out. Done.

wordtracker workouts out competition, aswell as people searching & then using these figures comes up with a KEI value, in which the higher KEI is, the easier its going to be to rank for that keyword. i'm gonna go check out se tools now though, peace

I've had really good results with Wordtracker, as well. I find the KEI value to be a pretty good indicator of how profitable a keyword will be, as well as how difficult it will be to rank for. This is especially helpful when working with a list of related keywords, in determining which to keep and which to discard.

Is Keyword Discovery part of Wordtracker? It's been awhile since I used the service, and I can't remember...

i tried keyword discovery. I logged in and was like umm, where do I go. Theres like a million things on the page for different services. No i signed up for discovery trial, all I want to see is one box to type some keywords in. I eventually got it working, nothing special. Wordtracker destroys it
