so i'm just getting into internet marketing and realize that the best niche has to have a lot of searches but low competition. i understand the search part. i just go to the google keyword tool(or any of the better ones), type in a niche keyword and see how many monthly searches it gets. OK, good.

the question i have is how do you know if it has lots of competition? do you look at how many websites/adwordads return when you do a google search for the keyword? or is there some tool that marketers use to streamline the whole process?

    thx

I'm no expert but what I do is do a google search of the terms I'm looking at and check the PR for the sites on the first page, the lower they are the better. I also check to see what kind of backlinks they have and do a google search for intitle:"keyword" then check how high the number of results is.

To check the pr and backlinks I use a firefox plugin that displays the pr, yahoo backlinks and tons of other information below each result called SeoQuake
