If I would have the exact keyphrase , words seperated by dashes, as the domain name for how much will it count to get me a good ranking ( percentage wise ). best regards, Eiso
Very little in my experience...Especially if you need to use a lot of dashes. Typically it is more helpful with AdSense then it is for the SERPS. I would work to make the url string as a whole contain keywords rather then add loads of dashes to the base domain.
The advantage to keywords in the domain comes in when you get natural links from other web sites-- since your keywords ARE your domain name, you're sure to get good inbound link text. If you use a brandable name rather than a keyword name, your naturally occuring IBLs will often contain your brand rather than keywords.
Except it can be counter productive if you have a lot of dashes as many sites shy away from linking to them as they see them as spammy.
Agreed. Anything with more than one dash in the domain looks spammy to me and reeks of something created just to rank highly. My personal choice is to use no dashes in the domain and then put keywords in the page/directory names.
It's a key ingredient for ranking on MSN. Something dct can confirm. I have two domains hyphenated and they do extremely well on MSN. But yeah, what's the point if no one searches on MSN
that was I was gonna say. Those high on MSN usually have keyword-rich domain name. but besides that no use at all.
The best way to answer this question is Search Your Keyword term. Do the top 10, 15 20 Have the exact keyword term in there Domain name? I would be willing to bet the majority don't have the exact keyword in there URL or domain name. The allintitle factor is one of the least weighted issue via Google's algorithym (for now). If you take those top 10 in your keyword and then look to see why they are top 10, you will start to understand the "formula" a little bit better. You can use tons of tools that are free all over the net. Mcadar.net offers great tools to check the factors that make SERPS ranking and you can compare your site to the top ten is many of the factors. If you do a little research, all the answers are there in essense, to determine what factors are more important that others in terms of Serps. Then just contantly test, and work your models. Read this forum and look at older posts, alot of the answers are already stated.
Providing you can get a decentish name without too many hyphens they are pretty good IMO. It's not just a case of the phrase being in the URL, it also makes it easier to get back links also with the phrase in the anchor text.
Yeah forgot to mention that, getting backlinks is easier because if a noob webmaster who's never heard of SEO links to you like this: <a href="your-web-site.com">your-web-site.com</a> Code (markup): Instead of: <a href="your-web-site.com">your prefered keywords</a> Code (markup): You'll still find yourself getting top class anchor text, automatically! That's because a - is a spacer and a _ isn't. And it also aids in Google's KW hilighting on SERPs. 2 and 3 KW domains I'd hyphenate any day, beyond 3 it may look dodgy to too many people to be worth the MSN and doofu anchor text benefit.
