If you want to rank for your keyphrase/domain, you want to be on at least page 2 of Google. Let's say, for example, the keyphrase/domain is "yellow birds", and you have yellow-birds.com But there are 400,000 Google searches a month, and most likely, medium/high competition as well. Is it realistic to expect to rank on at least page 2 of Google for your keyphrase domain through internal SEO and a light effort to built external links? Or should one pick a less saturated phrase to pursue? I want to built and rank for a key phrase, preferrably on page 1 of Google. But also want to be realistic. I don't want to aim for a tougher phrase, but neither a so and so longtail keyphrase.
Don't ever aim for page 2. You will rarely get much quality traffic from a page 2 ranking. Always aim for page #1...top 3 if possible. That is where the real traffic is. Do you really want visitors to visit 10+ pages within your niche before visiting your site? You can't expect much rankings with only light link building efforts. Rankings mostly come down to links. So pick a target keyword that you will be able to get enough backlinks to rank well. If you have limited time or resources, aim for a lower volume keyword that has less competition.
I also agree with vansterdam. Page 2 is no good - you hardly get any traffic from it. The difference in traffic between top of page 1 and page 2 is huge and this is what you need to be aiming for of else you would be wasting your time. Take time and make sure you're working on the correct keyword because if you decide to change at a later date you've wasted a lot of time and effort.
hi buddy I dont think a large number of people even bother to go to the second page to view the next 10 sites so aiming for the second page and expecting traffic is not a good idea just think why would anybody even go to the second page when they have 10 sites before them which are well optimized and in most cases a person's problem gets solved from the sites on the first page good luck with your website!! thanks, ankur
I mentioned page 2 as an example, to start slow - and have modest expectations. Once there, aim for page 1.
