I am considering on getting separate twitter accounts - one personal, one related to business industry 1, and another one related to a different industry. Is there anyone who maintains separate active Twitter accounts (excluding spam or automated accounts) for different interests? If so, what is your experience in having multiple accounts? Should I have different accounts? Thank you!
I would keep two separate to be honest. I have 2 accounts now , one for work where we use a tool to update each other and another for my football blog. So 2 separate uses. In your case, by all means have crossover in followers but the message is different on both. You need to keep your business feed pro and with tweets related to business , where as on your personal one its the same as just "hanging out" . Just my 2c ...
i was thinking about doing this myself. i have one to promote and share news about my website but wanted another personal one. I have been trying to register a new account all week but it wont let me...maybe something with the hacks they have been having.
Definately keep them separate - it's one thing to tell your friends that the cat's just been sick, you've got a hangover, the Little Boots album is a must-buy - but the last thing you should be telling clients or prospective clients. And on the other side of the coin, your friends don't want to be told everyday that you've got a pre-season sale, or whatever. I also think it's a good idea above and beyond that, to have twitter accounts that are tightly themed to a niche - and build up followers and followees (what is the term for someone you follow?) in that niche.
Where does it say you can't have more than one account? It's not in their ToS - http://twitter.com/tos
Definitely keep them seperate, you can be more relaxed in your personal one whereas with your business one you need to be as professional as possible and above all offering value to your customers.
Thank you everyone for responding to my thread! I got really good advice and explanations to help my make my decision. I'm going to have separate accounts - now I just need to decide on the names for each account (i.e. should I put my name somehow in each account?). I hope Twitter in the future doesn't ban multiple accounts as warned by life31. I did read the TOS that magda posted and didn't see any mention of having more accounts. Thanks again.
I have two twitter accounts and I use Seesmic or TweetDeck to manage the conversation. For the personal account, you definitely want to use your name as your username for branding purposes. You can always put your name in the NAME field, even if your account is twitter.com/yourbusiness I keep mine separate because the topics I want to discuss are vastly different and I don't want to lose interest of people who are not interested in one topic. Single accounts work when you have say a myname.com or personal branded website because people will understand that if you later release a new product or service that it's still under your "name" brand.
I have multiple accounts for different business interests. My primary issue seems to be keeping the personality from my own account OUT of the business ones. If my personal account "style" got mixed in with the business accounts, it would likely be bad news ..and it would lose followers fast! In addition, it's often tough to find a business "voice" that differs from my personal one...
I dont like to mix my personal matters with business so I have seprate twitter account for personal and business use. IMO you should also have seprate accounts.
Unfortunately, many freelancers, particularly, have seized upon the concept of “social media networking for business†without taking the time to find the appropriate boundaries between “social†and “business.†This is in part because people who do, say, copywriting or website design tend to be “early adopters†of new tools and technology.
It depends how your operate with your network. IMO, if your yet another 2o year old seo-know-it-all freelance consultant who doesn't operate his/her whole life professionally then 2 accounts are defiantly the way to go. if your professional all the time then I see no problem with a "brand-ovangerlous" style twitter account. I have freelanced for several years now and my network know and follow me on that bassis
