When I used to run a PC I had AVG. I use a Mac now and don't use any anti-virus. Haven't had any problems yet, 2 years strong.

I tried Kaspesky and Norton and in my opinion Kaspersky is better. For me it's easier in use and better in system protection.

Is there any way I can get ESET free? It was a great thing back when I used it but I can't find a cracked/full free version of it and I don't have excess money to put into AVs.

I second ESET. I've been using them for around 6 years now and have never had any problems.
It's build in detection system is excelent.
And secondly the one owner is South African, so that is another reason to do so.

My personal favourite is Bitdefender, and it is probably the best rated antivirus. But it is not available free so you will have to buy it

I have never had problems with my kaspersky protected machines, however.
when my kaspersky licenses expire, i will be moving all my machines over to eset. Simply as we know people that had issues with their pc that kaspersky could not solve, putting on eset found viruses that kaspersky was unable to detect.

For free I used to recommend MSE but now recommend Avira. For paid offerings I would recommend Kaspersky first followed by NOD32. And which ever one you go with I would also recommend running it alongside MalwareBytes Pro. Running this with an AV software along with WOT (Web Of Trust) and Open DNS will protect you from the majority of attacks.

Eset may not have the name recognition of some of the antivirus solutions in our roundup, bu their level of protection is certainly second to none. Their Smart Security suite offers a combination of malware and internet-based threat protection and does that job extremely well, blocking 98.9% of all threats with a very low rate of false positives, according to AV-comparatives. Eset doesn’t offer some of the extraneous features??

I have been using Avast for a long time now without any problem. Unlike other antivirus softwares Avast doesn't make my computer slow.
