I have real-world, i.e. longer than 6 months usage experience of 3 antivirus systems: AVG - crippled the performance of my home PC Symantec - crippled the performance of my work PC Kaspersky - can't tell it's installed except that it detects more viruses that either of the 2 above (or at least it says it does).
Kaspersky's detection is a lot better then Symantec. However it uses more resources. I am using Norton Gamers Edition
Well im the guy who have experienced both first of all i was using NAV 2005 and 2006. At that time kaspersky was little short of protection but nav was good. ofcourse it slowed down computer a lot.. i was thinking as nav would gets faster in future... but as days passed on nav got much slower and protection become shorter... meanwhile kaspersky is faster and secure. i bought kav 2010 internet security its 99.% safe and fast.
well i have tried them nearly all , norton 2009 has really improved but is still a system hog as has bit defender become , kaspersky and me just can't get along somehow , so nod32 it is for me, light and effective.
Like "christyzen" is saying each and every security software has its pros and cons, if you dont get sold by reading reviews of your most beloved applications just test 2-3 of them 1 month each and put your money on the one you thought worked the best. Eset NOD32 dont have a firewall but its bigger brother Eset smart security have. Eset smart security is really an all in one security package. Symantec offers the classic antivirus solution but also launched an all in one application called norton 360. You either love or hate norton. When I personally tried one of Kaspersky's security software - every time I rebooted my pc it froze 10 sec into windows and EVERY time. So I had to uninstall the software and test something else instead. If you do want to read some free reviews ill post some resources here below of the ones people have mentioned the most: Norton Antivirus Review Kaspersky Antivirus Review Nod32 Antivirus Review Happy reading!
I have removed all antivirus from my computers as I think if you follow basic safety precaution of never running .exe file directly you wont get infected. Most of my time (or all of my time) is spent in a browser environment which is already having inbuilt protection capability from web based malware. The only time I download software I test by uploading to online virus scanning sites like virustotal and trend micro housecall. There is no need for desktop based antivirus unless your computer is being used by someone newbie in the field of computing.
kaspersky is way easy and light when comparing to norton. That's my personal experience hadn't yet tried it on some bigger network.
Did you guys forget about Avira. Its the best around. It's light-weight, doesn't slow down the system, neither does it delete important system files (as some of those anti-viruses do), is regularly updated (virus definitions) & detect almost anything that's harmful to your computer. No wonder it is the top downloaded antivirus in softpedia. I switched from Norton because it was too bulky. I've been using this ever since with no problems at all. And yep, it's FREE.
I used Norton until my friend introduced me to Kaspersky. It's really the better product and for a better value. There is no comparison, to be completely honest.
kaspersky - doesnt slow down your PC Symantec - dramatically slowdown your PC i hate to see PC bogged down.
I've been using Kaspersky for about 3 yrs. It's real time protection is amazing. I don't understand why people feel Norton as the only AV available for PC. By the way, how this thread is related to Microsoft?
Mate, I kinda of disagree with you. If the files were infected, it would have deleted them not otherwise. I mean, why would an anti virus delete any UN-infected file for that matter ? I would personally prefer Kaspersky over all others. 2 months for training to use it ? I don't think so. They are just too basic for a person who is working as network engineer in a huge mobile company I guess. I mean, those are just fine options. Regards, CB
