Here is the thing, in my whole entire life, I only owned 1 forum. I was the co-owner so basically, I had no clue about this whole SEO stuff. I'm trying to break into the webmaster world and start earning online. I know it's not an easy task but I have time to devote. I'm looking for help in starting my first successful website. I'm more into forums since I have some experience with them. I need to know, what makes more money and what is harder to get traffic to... forums or blogs? I also need pointers on how to market my first site. So thanks in advance to whoever helps me out.

What niche/market will you be targeting, in other words, who's your target audience?

Actually this is depend on your budget.
If you have big budget, then consider pay to click ads such as adsense.
Else you can try link exchange with other same niche forum.

If you can write well then start a blog. If you can bring a community together then start a forum. Or if you have a good budget you can start both and whichever goes better keep it, and get rid of the other one...

You should know that Forums commonly make less on earning for Ads.

I'll like to address few points that may be of some help to you, it may also be something others already mentioned. The following does not specifically consider if it's forum. blog, or a website.

    1. Define your target audience.
    2. Determine advertising budget.
    3. Build link exchange with similar sites.
    4. Advertise only to target audience and never waste resources on general audiences.
    5. Consider site accessibility.
    6. Monetize your site, but building a good traffic comes first.

Nither is better than other as far as earning money or traffic is concerned, the more effort you put into it the more successful it becomes. Forums in general tend to have more loyal return visitors, while in blogs it "may" be less. Again it all depends on your target audience. However, there are more options available to you to monetize blogs than forums.

I guess that's all I can think up right now. :)

Forums and blogs are the place to start, comment on threads, so while you learn about SEO in webmaster forums or by reading webmaster blogs you will also be increasing backlinks.
