Trying to populate a forum. Will be interesting to see how well it works. Exciting.

    good luck.

I spent ~$100 on AdWords, but failed horribly.

But after reading threads on here, I feel I have gained a much better knowledge in this field now.

    Again GL. PM replied BTW.

normally forum is a long period investment as it takes about one year to have the forum running.

You need to know exactly how much you want to pay per subscription and track it.

Are you prepared to pay in advance $300 to have 1000 users? You need to answer yourself this kind of questions before begin.

have some patience and keep trying different keywords. It might be expensive to learn it this way. Once u know the trick, you will know what keywords to target and the best way to reduce cost.

Personally I think an AdWords campaign to "jumpstart" a forum is a waste of money (compared to other methods). Especially if you are planning on recouping some of the money through AdSense.

If you are going to run a campaign for a forum, make sure

1.) Your forum is unique or highly topical, an SEO or General forum won't benefit
2.) The forum is already active. That can be through real or artificial means but if people do end up clicking on your Ad and see - Last Post Jan 5th or empty topics, they will just leave

Why don't you populate your forum by sharing the ad revenue with the posters? Just like what Digital Point is doing. May be you can terminate this technique after you gain a great number of visitors!

What other methods would you compare it too that you think provide a better value?

When done right I've seen AdWords be very, very effective in generating members, content and revenue for forums.

Exactly, AdWords can help drive qualified visitors to your site but it can't close the deal - your site has to do that.
