Its not a good idea, in today's time Technology is getting so and so advance, you can't even sure that WWW will remain for 5 years or not (but certainly it will)and getting register for 5 years is not a good step, it was good for Facebook to advance form thefacebook.com to facebook.com, if Zuckerburg bought even a 10 year program, but without even starting its not a good idea

Aged domains are always better for SEO, not technically speaking. If it was a competition between a similar new domain, and the five year domain, the five year domain would rank better out of the box.

Old year Domain is good for Getting ranking in the search engine. Because New Domain have to face new google algorithm strategy. Google not much response a new domain for ranking. So this is good your domain is 5 years old, but You have to do continue working for your website to improve your page rank.

To my knowledge Google would favor a domain that is registered well into the future.

There is zero evidence to support this.

It doesn't matter at all whether you register the domain for long term or not. Similarly, it won't have any effect on SEO.

Ghoss!! The length of registration has nothing to do with SEO.
The only pros is the peach of mind with a price.

You mean you have registered a domin for 5 years??? are you crazy? Don't you see the present change in Algorithm? Today your site is in SERP 3 but tomorrow it can be in no where. So its better to register for 1 year.

I doubt google looks at the length of registration. But it can't hurt to register it longer than a year. It at least keeps you from losing the domain if you forget to renew it.

Simply put the advantage of have an old domain is for you to have a higher page ranking because of all the traffic and other SEO related matters that's been collected through that domain. However, it is the ever changing algorithm that destroys such domain. Not literally of course. Still you have a lot of things to do for you to even be able to adapt for those changes for the next 4 years with the domain that you bought.

Old is Gold, and yes it applies in SEO too. So my suggestion is just go for it. Do proper SEO on it and am sure it shows good results than a new domain.

No effect, but if it's a good name and it's not killing you to pay for five years then that's a good thing. Good luck to you

Wow - what rubbish I have just read from some posts!

Registering a domain for five years has nothing AT ALL to do with SEO and Google certainly don't know or care how long you have registered a domain for.

the internet will still be here in five years domain names will be all the better - .com's are running out and if you keep a .com and do something with a site attached to it then you are making an investment on that purchase :)

I think he means he purchased a 5 Year Old Dropped/Expired Domain name, not that he Registered it for 5 Years.

If so then yes it will help with SEO as it already had a lot of history behind the Domain and hopefully some back links still active.

If the domain is short, with some backlinks or pagerank, then it's of good value.

I think OP's question was about influence of long forward registration (and not domain age) on ranking
