What you might do is put a toolbar (728X 190) on the top of your page as well as a 160X600 toolbar with adsense on the left or right side. Make sure that your adsense shows whenever you open the site, not whenever you click on a particular article. Submit your new articles to blog carnivals. Post on related sites message boards. Try to get as much traffic as possible.
x2 traffic is the great equalizer for any advertiser. Billboards on roads that get a lot of traffic cost more because they're seen by more people. The same is true for ads on the net, get more traffic and your ads will be worth more. Good luck to you.

If you have a desire to increase your earning, you will see it rising to $100 per month in a few days. I am saying this from my own experience. When I started using Adsense, I was getting about $60 pm. And it took quite some time for me to get my first $100 in one month check. Within a few months it increased to $450 pm. Now I am trying to make it $500 / month from next month onwards. Anyways, Congrats...I know how it feels when you get your first check.
