That's a good question. I recently say my travel writing contest (one blog entry on my travel blog) shoot up to PR 6 while the blog itself remained PR 5. Now I do have some some links coming straight at my writing contest, but certainly not nearly as many (not equal quality either) as I have coming at my blog's index page. Of course the only explanation is PR is now officially weird.

no outbound links to those pages could be a reason for a DROP in PR

can be termed as a generous update for new websites
while most old sites are at same level
also, some old sites lost PR on internal pages

i have seen a fluctuation in PR, has anyone else noticed the same.
After update, the PR was quite stable, so this time a change in PR raises eyebrow
please let me know if anyone else has seen it

Damn, and I thought getting straight to PR4 was doing well...

Is page rank purely link related? If so, then I could understand as I've only recently started actively seeking out directories etc to build links?

Actually, visioninfotech and williamjack, I did see a little blip late last night when one of my PR5 home pages was showing PR4 on the toolbar. This morning it's back to PR5.

Yes. It's based on number and quality of links pointing to that specific page.

i find it as the most stable update on PR, otherwise it is always changing for atleast 5 - 6 days before becoming stable.
