the .com is easier for people to remember, but wasnt available 2 months ago when I started the site but now im not sure how to go about using it, and not losing search engine ranking, can I use both the .net and .com? Could I just leave everything on the .net and forward the .com to the .net if that makes any sense, that way I remain .net but if someone were to type .com it would take them to the right place. Or is that a stupid idea? What would be the best scenario
Set up a 301 forward from the .com to .net and you will be fine. I do this with one of my sites with no problems at all!
The best thing you could do is put a 301 redirect on the .com domain .. that way you won't lose any link juice .. and by the way .net is easy to remember too
redirect is ideal..but you know most people dont literally type the website, instead they search for a phrase and just click for the site to open
Permanent redirection is the best solution. For a seamless redirection, keep the following points in mind.... - Tell the search engines about your site's redirection using 301 redirect. - Test the move process by moving the contents of one directory or sub-domain first. - Don't do a blanket redirect directing all traffic from your old site to your new home page. This will avoid 404 errors, but it's not a good user experience. - Check both external and internal links to pages on your site. - To prevent confusion, it's best to make sure you retain control of your old site domain for at least 180 days or preferably 1 year. - Google webmaster tool allow you to specify the domains that you are switching. - Finally, keep both your new and old site verified in Webmaster Tools, and review crawl errors regularly to make sure that the 301s from the old site are working properly, and that the new site isn't showing unwanted 404 errors. 301 redirections may influence you rankings for a while but soon thy will bounce back to normal.
you can redirect your old domain to new one if you want to keep both domain then make both sites different.
