Just got my rankings back, but...

    Hi

I was sandboxed for a while recently. While sandboxed I got a new site built. However, my rankings have surged back this morning. Now I am in a dilemma. The new site looks fantastic and I want to use it. However, the old one is ranking high again. Is there any way I can direct customers when they enter the old site to the new one?

This way I will keep the rankings based on the old design, but the customers will go immediately to the new one?

    Thanks

    Craig

You need to do a 301 redirect from your old site to the new one.

Right, a 301 redirection is OK. Done it via hosting control panel or just in your .htaccess file.:)

Design has no effect on rankings just to clarify.

As noted 301 redirect all site pages from old to new.

Use a 301 redirect from old to new.

    HI

was in the sandox for about 2.5 weeks. My rankings went from really high to nowhere, then back overnight. I know some sites can take longer. My keywords are quite niche so I think the less competitive keywords, then the less time in sandbox.

If you want my experience... don't mess with the one ranking. Sure... a 301 could help and pass on some or maybe even all the link juice but why risk it?

Sometimes when you 301 Google doesn't seem to always provide the full benefits that the old website had. We 301 a website about 6 months ago and lost about 6-7 spots in the SERPS.

Without risk there is no reward!!!!!!!!

And if you're 301 did not work as well as you would have liked, then all you needed to do was build some quality one way anchor text links to the new pages.

Further of course it will take time to see changes completed, in full results, Google is a database driven website as it would need to be, and as such old information would need to be purged, and new information added analyzed and scored. That could take months to a year...depending on competitive nature of the niche.

Hope this helps you to see your issues are yours, because you have just enough knowledge of how a search engine works, to be detrimental ;)
